Summary

From New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Rene Watson comes a new YA--a love story about not only a romantic relationship but how a girl finds herself and falls in love with who she really is。

When Nala Robertson reluctantly agrees to attend an open mic night for her cousin-sister-friend Imani's birthday, she finds herself falling in instant love with Tye Brown, the MC。 He's perfect, except 。 。 。 Tye is an activist and is spending the summer putting on events for the community when Nala would rather watch movies and try out the new seasonal flavors at the local creamery。 In order to impress Tye, Nala tells a few tiny lies to have enough in common with him。 As they spend more time together, sharing more of themselves, some of those lies get harder to keep up。 As Nala falls deeper into keeping up her lies and into love, she'll learn all the ways love is hard, and how self-love is revolutionary。

In Love Is a Revolution, plus size girls are beautiful and get the attention of the hot guys, the popular girl clique is not shallow but has strong convictions and substance, and the ultimate love story is not only about romance but about how to show radical love to the people in your life, including to yourself。

Loving yourself really is a revolution。 What a relatable book! Trying to figure out who you should or need to be to fit in, to make others like you, to like yourself。 It was hard to watch Nala's self destruction, but as you see with the other characters we are all guilty of it, it's just how you bounce back。 Loving yourself really is a revolution。 What a relatable book! 4。75 starsThis is such a heartwarming story about balancing having a sense of belonging with stepping into your own personhood。 I loved Nala- even though I couldn't exactly relate to her feelings (I was more of an Imani growing up) I felt like I could understand her perspective and her struggles。 The theme of belonging is carried throughout the book with the various 'we' that each person belongs to。 Being Jamaican and also growing up in New York, this book was more nostalgic than I could have an 4。75 starsThis is such a heartwarming story about balancing having a sense of belonging with stepping into your own personhood。 I loved Nala- even though I couldn't exactly relate to her feelings (I was more of an Imani growing up) I felt like I could understand her perspective and her struggles。 The theme of belonging is carried throughout the book with the various 'we' that each person belongs to。 Being Jamaican and also growing up in New York, this book was more nostalgic than I could have anticipated。 The characters felt very cohesive- even though they were so different, you could imagine each circle of friends and family as real people。 I loved Nala's journey and how she handled herself after making a big mistake- something we must all learn to do。 I am so glad I decided to include YA fiction in my reading list this year! 。。。more

Nala was hoping to find love this summer, but she never thought she'd find it at an Inspire Harlem event。 The activist organization is her cousin-sister-friend Imani's thing。 Tye is perfect and she can't believe he's into her, so she pretends to be a vegetarian and acts like she's volunteering at a local retirement home instead of just hanging out doing puzzles with her grandmother。 At first being with Tye is better than her wildest dreams。 But soon she gets tired of pretending to be someone she Nala was hoping to find love this summer, but she never thought she'd find it at an Inspire Harlem event。 The activist organization is her cousin-sister-friend Imani's thing。 Tye is perfect and she can't believe he's into her, so she pretends to be a vegetarian and acts like she's volunteering at a local retirement home instead of just hanging out doing puzzles with her grandmother。 At first being with Tye is better than her wildest dreams。 But soon she gets tired of pretending to be someone she's not。 What will happen when Tye finds out she's been lying to him? Why shouldn't she be enough as she is? Soon her dream summer turns into a nightmare。 The theme of the novel is captured by the title and watching it all unfold was incredibly moving。 Topics ranging from self-image to activism are explored without it ever feeling didactic or preachy。 Every character is well-drawn and layered and the way the plot all comes together is masterful。 I absolutely adored this novel and highly recommend it。 。。。more

I would’ve loved to have read this book as a teenager。 I think it does a great job of offering perspective of different places, people, and cultures - even within a city。 A lot of the things that Nala feels are things that I could relate to as a teenager, and an adult。 I loved the author’s voice, and the way that she was able to convey thoughts to the reader。

Just finished this awesome YA title and it was wonderful- I need more Nala! Read this for a sweet, thoughtful book to make you smile。 Definitely reminded me of being a teenager。 Other reasons I loved this were so many I made a list just like Nala does:-Nala journals, and her thought processes she shares is so down to earth, especially as she relates to her favorite singer songwriter。-All the character are realistic, well developed characters。 -I rooted for Nala and Tye together and alone。-Nala w Just finished this awesome YA title and it was wonderful- I need more Nala! I really loved this。 It’s about a teen navigating family and friendship。 It feels real without the teen angst that makes me so frustrated with teenage love。

Pros- Love the pace of the book。 It was a great quick read。- Main character Nala is very relatable to experiencing low self esteem and learning to love herself first。- I think this should be everyone’s MUST READS especially young black woman。- I enjoy the self love lists that was included in on Nala’s journal entries。- I like how Nala voiced her opinion in a respectable fashion。Favorite quote: “The most radical thing you can do is love yourself and each other。”Cons- Not a huge fan of the forced Pros- Love the pace of the book。 It was a great quick read。- Main character Nala is very relatable to experiencing low self esteem and learning to love herself first。- I think this should be everyone’s MUST READS especially young black woman。- I enjoy the self love lists that was included in on Nala’s journal entries。- I like how Nala voiced her opinion in a respectable fashion。Favorite quote: “The most radical thing you can do is love yourself and each other。”Cons- Not a huge fan of the forced upon mom back in the picture if it was so hard for Nala to talk about I think it could’ve been a little more expressive of self。 。。。more

This book was so easy to read。 It was fluid and sucked me right into the world of Nala's summer in Harlem。 I absolutely adored this story of unlearned and radical love。 In this book "love is a revolution" refers to self love and learning and accepting yourself。 But, the concept of "love is a revolution" can be applied differently for everyone。I loved that the climax/ major conflict happened sooner in this book than in other contemporaries I have read。 For that reason, I felt there was more time This book was so easy to read。 It was fluid and sucked me right into the world of Nala's summer in Harlem。 I absolutely adored this story of unlearned and radical love。 In this book "love is a revolution" refers to self love and learning and accepting yourself。 But, the concept of "love is a revolution" can be applied differently for everyone。I loved that the climax/ major conflict happened sooner in this book than in other contemporaries I have read。 For that reason, I felt there was more time to lead up to the resolution。 Sometimes I find apologies and reconciliation at the end of these type of stories are often rushed and not as genuine。 But Renee Watson did a great job with this。I am so pleased to give this 5 stars。 It was a great balance between cute and serious。 。。。more
